I am excited to share that music started this week. Thank you to the teachers and staff for being so patient during my recovery from ankle surgery. And I am glad we waited because BOY- did we have fun! This first month is all about getting to know each other and enjoying music time by singing songs, moving to the beat, and even playing a few instruments.  I will be sharing monthly music activities and songs on this blog, as well as links to songs and musical activities you can use at home. So please come back and visit often.

Singing and music play an important role in our culture. You'll find music present in many aspects of our lives: theater, television, movies, worship, holidays, and celebrations. At home, music can become part of our family culture – a natural part of our everyday experiences. SO start singing and dancing daily with your children.

Let's be honest- teaching music is the BEST class to teach in any school, but especially our sweet preschool. HOW your child benefits during music time is important to me. They learn by: LISTENING, MOVING, PLAYING, REPETITION, and EXPERIMENTATION. All of these things take place during the school year in our music classes.

Think about this- when in your lifetime, was there no music? If you are like me, that answer is....... never. Music brings people together, reflects our moods, and reminds us of those special moments/times in our lives. BUT- in our schools, music teaches kids how to learn. That simple- music helps to teach kids HOW to learn, especially young children. Music helps children to decode sounds and words, and, it benefits the development of language. When a child is learning about music, he/she has to tap into multiple skill sets, often at the same time. There is research that shares how music can positively impact math and reading learning abilities (one quick example- http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/music-arts/the-benefits-of-music-education/ ).

Every March since 1985, schools put an extra focus on music. And for good reason. Sponsored by the National Association of Music Education, Music In Our Schools focuses in on the benefits of quality music programs for all grade levels, and the overall impact it has on raising a happy, healthy, and highly educated child. Studies show that introducing a child to music early on can have a profound impact.

Since Valentine's Day is in February, I decided to make music classes all about LOVE. From counting hearts to skipping valentines, we sang, danced, and played instruments to learn songs about loving each other, loving ourselves, and loving our family and Jesus. Here are the musical concepts each age worked on in February:
