Smyrna First United Methodist Preschool/Kindergarten

About Us

Smyrna First United Methodist Preschool/Kindergarten is a non-profit weekday school for children 2 years to 5 years old of any race, color, national, religious, or ethnic origin. The program, begun in 1969, is a ministry of Smyrna First United Methodist Church and is operated as a part of the Church’s educational program. A Governing Board administers the school.

We believe that each child is a child of God and has a right to develop to his/her fullest potential. Our responsibility as a church-sponsored school is to provide a program that will foster development of the whole child: emotionally, intellectually, socially, physically, and spiritually.

The staff is composed of qualified and experienced early childhood educators. All of the staff members have a current background check and are trained in the Safe Sanctuary policy of the Church. All maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid procedures. Staff members also participate in a continuous program of in-service education in order to further their knowledge and to remain cognizant of the needs of our children. Our school is recognized as a School of Excellence by the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.

All that we expect of the children in our school is that they come to school, be themselves, and have respect for others. What we expect of parents is that you read the operating procedures in this handbook and in the supplemental notes and newsletters that we send you from time to time; and that you feel free to be a part of the school, offering suggestions, comments, and constructive criticisms, as well as financial, volunteer, and moral support.

We use a developmentally appropriate play-based curriculum that is uniquely ours.  It is time tested, research based and is ever evolving to meet our children’s needs and to align with emerging education research.  We use a balance of structured and child-centered approaches that focus on critical thinking and hands on learning.  Emphasis is also on fostering both emotional and spiritual growth.

Our primary goal is to help every child develop the skills necessary for success in life: cognitive, language, gross and fine motor, and social.  Basic group social skills – sharing, cooperation, concern for others and our world, personal responsibility, and confidence – are emphasized from the first day of school at every level.

The 2 year and 3 year classes use an integrated unit based curriculum that emphasizes early literacy and number awareness as well developing an awareness and appreciation of our world. Scholastic’s My Big World introduces science and social studies concepts.  Fine motor skills are developed through art and manipulatives.  Learning is center based.

The 4 year and Kindergarten classes utilize the SRA Open Court Imagine It! reading curriculum, Math Their Way, Scholastic's Let’s Find Out and Handwriting Without Tears.
