A letter from our Senior Pastor

Thank you so much for choosing Smyrna First United Methodist Church to begin your child’s educational journey.  We take very seriously the honor of teaching your child and our role in partnering with your family as you begin this next season of your lives.  You and your family will be covered in our prayers and enveloped in the grace and love of God through this remarkable congregation.

Throughout the year, we will have chapel and various opportunities for your child to begin their understanding of the special place God holds for them in His heart.  It is a wonderful opportunity for you to begin the habits that will form your family’s core values.  As the Lead Pastor of this church, I consider one of my highest privileges and responsibilities to be that of your child’s first pastor.  It will be my goal that we know each other by name.

Jesus continually admonished and directed His disciples to bring the children to Him.  I am thrilled to have the opportunity to minister to your family and to invite you into this church that takes the words of Jesus so seriously.  We will teach your children academically and spiritually in their time with us at Smyrna FUMC.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or needs.

In the hollow of His hands,

A letter from our Associate Pastor

Hello, Parents!

On behalf of Pastor Derek Porter, myself, and the wonderful staff at Smyrna First United Methodist Church, we welcome you to a new year at the Preschool.  We want you to know that we have been praying for you as we, ourselves, have been preparing for your coming and return.  Right up front we want to say, "Thank you for trusting us with your children and your child's development.  It is an HONOR!"

Jesus placed a special emphasis on children, noting that we all must become like them in order to experience faith fully. Here at Smyrna First UMC, we continue that emphasis—nurturing growth, relationships, and most of all, faith.

I hope you know that your children are in the best of hands. Each of our staff and faculty are motivated to provide the best of care and education for your kids. Part of that education and its success is your involvement and we encourage you to take advantage of the different opportunities there are that celebrate and encourage your child’s growth.

Pastor Derek and I want you to know that we are here for you. Our doors are open for whatever needs you may have. Many of you are members of other churches, but we still consider YOU one of our own.  We want you to take advantage of the resources we have to offer right here, whether those resources are educational or spiritual.

Again, welcome to Smyrna First UMC Preschool!

In Joyful Obedience,

Pastor Whit Martin

Dear Parents

Welcome to the 2017-2018  school year! We look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child. There is much behind-the-scenes work to prepare for a successful school year and we work hard to insure a great school year for all! The teachers and parents must communicate and work together for the completion of this goal.

Your child’s preschool experience sets the stage for their success later in “big” school. There are several things that you can do to help your child succeed. Have your child attend regularly, except when ill. Bring them to school on time, so that they can begin the day with the rest of their classmates. Take an interest in what is brought home and discuss the work and activities of the day. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN! Your child will benefit and so will you. By listening, you will develop a relationship with your child based on really knowing who they are and what they need. Talk to the teacher about your child, but please, NEVER discuss your child in his or her presence. Schedule conferences if needed, and attend the one scheduled by the teacher. If anything upsets you or your child, please report it to the teacher or the director as soon as possible. To ensure the best day possible for your child, make sure they have plenty of sleep, a good breakfast, and positive reinforcements from you about school and the commitment to learning.

This handbook is your guide to our policies and procedures. Please read it thoroughly and keep it in a handy place for easy reference. Please feel free to call the Preschool/Kindergarten Office with any questions you might have.

Thank you for being a part of our program and for letting us be an important part of your child’s life! We look forward to seeing you and hearing from you on a regular basis. Together, we can provide a wonderful experience for your child as they begin their life of learning and growing.
